The skills audit of Greater Manchester (2002) identified the following skills shortages. As a result addressing these training needs will be a main priority over the coming years.
Welcome to Excellence
Welcome to Excellence is a series of accredited training programmes, developed specifically for the hospitality, leisure, travel and tourism industry.
There are now seven one-day training programmes, which provide front-line staff and managers with the skills they need to provide high standards of customer service.

ITQ
ITQ is a national on-line flexible training programme that can be tailored to suit the needs of your business and IT skills of each employee.
Designed around a range of optional modules - from basic to advanced – the qualification can meet any variety of IT training demands, to improve generic computer skills or to develop specific user skills around specialist software or bespoke IT systems.
It is possible to mix and match modules so that you can tailor skill development to specific job roles or customised systems.

People 1st UK Skills Passport
The UK Skills Passport is a unique web based resource providing skills development tools, information, advice and guidance for both employers and employees.
As a hospitality and tourism industry employee, there are great benefits to joining in the UK Skills Passport. Once you have registered you will be able to view career maps of the whole sector to help you understand who does what and what qualifications you need to move your career forward. You will see where the best courses are, where you can get the best training and what funding is available.
If you sign up for the UK Skills Passport you will be able to save your own profile, interact with other people and see new jobs first – with hints and tips to help you get them!
Employers can also benefit from registering by promoting their business to the hospitality and tourism sector and displaying their credentials.
Employers can create professional job descriptions, manage and post job vacancies and identify government funding available to recruit and retain staff.
Employers will also be able to view verified records of applicants’ skills, experience and qualifications.

E-Skills passport
The e-skills Passport has been developed by e-skills UK, the Sector Skills Council (SSC). It is an IT skills management system that identifies any skills gaps and targets training.
The e-skills Passport is for anyone who uses or wants to use information technology (IT), whatever their current skills. It is an on-line service that allows people to assess and record their IT user skills and then create a personal training plan to improve skills and obtain a relevant qualification.
The e-skills Passport will become a complete and ongoing record of your technology skills and achievements.

The Young Waiter training programme will equip restaurant service personnel with the skills necessary to deliver World Class Service to customers, to enhance their skills and knowledge and ultimately assist them in achieving sales targets within their establishments. Marketing Manchester is working with City College Manchester to signpost Manchester taxi drivers to NVQ Level 2 ‘Transporting Passengers through Taxi and Private Hire’. The course is flexible to suit taxi drivers and covers 7 modules over a 12-week training programme:
- Customer Service for Passenger Transport
- Passenger Transport and Equal Opportunities
- Passenger Transport and Disability Awareness
- Taxi and Private Hire Safety
- Carriage of Luggage and Parcels
- Route Planning
- Taxi and Private Hire Regulation (UK)
In addition to this qualification, Marketing Manchester designed a tourism knowledge course called ‘Mapping out Manchester’ to address the importance of tourism to the area and the crucial role that taxi drivers play in ensuring the whole visitor experience is positive, through their excellent customer service skills and tourism product knowledge.
